I hear you asking...., "But is it so easy? I mean, could I really get a job teaching English?"

Well, the short answer is yes. The longer answer includes a few caveats, however. First, if you've never lived abroad before, you could be in for a real unexpected challenge. Vacation travel is one thing - but actually living abroad for a year or two or three is much different. Now you're dealing with all the day to day issues - eating unfamilar food, hearing an unfamiliar language and all the other things not often considered - from getting a phone to renting an apartment to banking. More than a few first time EFL (English as a Foreign Language) teachers have experienced severe home-sickness - that's for sure!

You'll also want to have a TEFL Certificate and preferrably a bachelor's degree. This will aid you considerably in your job search. A bachelor's degree is not required in all countries, but for some it is a prerequisite for obtaining a work visa. It is very important that you research the country in which you're considering teaching. Remember, each country has its own requirements and guidelines. When it comes to a TEFL certificate, it's not as critically important which school you attend. There is no traditional  accreditation for CTEFL programs, so choose one that's been around for a bit and has a good reputation for graduating competent beginning teachers.

Good courses will also expose you to the details of resume preparation for an ESL/EFL job, as well as with areas such as interviewing and contract negotiation.

Once you begin the job search, in many cases you'll be able to interview for jobs from a distance thanks to the convenience of email and phone.

Not all English teachers are heading outside of the USA either, so if you're more interested in working state-side, there are lots of opportunities for you too. Private language schools, literacy volunteer programs, college prep programs for students coming into the USA to attend school, Workplace English, Business English (Cert.TBE) and even your own private teaching.
